Safety --Band Saw, Drill Press, Portable Drill, Scroll Saw
Safety – Band Saw

1. Obtain permission from your teacher before using the band saw.

2. Plan sawing procedure so there may be a maximum forward feed with a minimum of backing out of cuts.

3. Cut only stock (wood, metal) with a flat surface.

4. Make sure the proper width saw is on the machine for your particular job. In this class the instructor will set the saw width.

5. Check to see that all guards are in place.

6. Make sure all adjustments ONLY when the machine is at a dead stop.

7. Set the upper saw guide 1/4 inch or less above the stock to be cut; check with the teacher if the stock is rough or warped.

8. Ask the teacher to approve all special setups.

9. Make sure no one but you are inside the operator’s zone.

10. Wear face shield or goggles.

11. Hold material firmly.

12. Keep fingers a safe distance from the saw blade.

13. Feed material into machine at a moderate rate of speed.

14. Keep saw blade from twisting or binding, especially when cutting diagonal lines.

15. Allow machine to come to a full and complete stop before backing the saw out of the stock (special circumstance only).

16. Keep waste from accumulating on the saw table.

17. Step away IMMEDIATELY if the saw breaks or comes off. Shut off power if possible without endangering yourself. Notify your teacher immediately.

18. Turn off power after using the band saw and stand by the machine until the machine comes to a full and complete stop.

19. Clear away scraps of wood on the table ONLY after the saw is stopped. Keep the floor or counter area around the saw clean.


Safety – Drill Press

1. Obtain permission from your teacher before using the drill Press.

2. Make any adjustments only when the power switch is off.

3. Be certain that the table and the head of the drill press are secure.

4. Select the proper drill bit (be sure it’s sharp) and coolant (if drilling metal).

5. Remove the chuck key IMMEDIATELY after using it.

6. Use the drill press vice whenever possible. Clamp vise or work to the drill press table.

7. Make sure that no one but you are inside the operator’s zone.

8. Wear a face shield or safety goggles when using the drill press. Tie back long hair, push up long sleeves, and tuck in any dangling items (jewelry, hood pulls, etc.).

9. Turn on power after permission is given.

10. Operate the feed handle so that the drill cuts evenly into work.

11. Ease up of feed pressure when drill begins to break through material.

12. Back the drill bit out as soon as the hole is drilled.

13. Stop the drill press and wait until it comes to a complete stop before attempting to remove work, chips, or cuttings.

14. Use a brush to remove chips or shavings.

15. Keep the floor clean around the drill press.

16. Step away IMMEDIATELY if work becomes loose and is seized by the drill; shut off power if possible without endangering yourself.

17. Turn off the power after using the drill press and stand by the machine until the machine has come to a full and complete stop.

18. Clean off the drill press table and surrounding area. Return cleaned drill bits, coolants, and clamping devices to their proper places.


Safety – Portable Electric Drill

1. Obtain permission from your teacher before using the portable electric drill.

2. Select the proper drill bit (make sure it’s sharp) and coolant (metals).

3. Make sure the switch is in the off position before plugging the drill in.

4. Remove the chuck key IMMEDIATELY after using it.

5. Keep the drill, electric cord, and plug dry at all times.

6. Make sure all materials to be drilled are clamped and secure before drilling.

7. Wear face shield or goggles. Tie back long hair, push up long sleeves, and tuck in any dangling items (jewelry, hood pulls, etc.).

8. Plug in electric cord only after checking steps one through seven.

9. Hold the drill firmly.

10. Keep hands away from the spindle and drill.

11. Apply straight and steady pressure on the drill.

12. Ease up on pressure just before the drill bit begins to break through the material.

13. Back drill bit out as soon as the hole is drilled.

14. Turn off power and hold drill firmly until it comes to a complete stop--- then rest the drill on its side.


Safety – Scroll (Jig) Saw

1. Obtain permission from your teacher before using the scroll saw.

2. Cut only stock (wood or metal) with a flat surface on the bottom.

3. Make adjustments only when the machine is at a full and complete stop.

4. Make sure the saw blade is the proper size for the job. Check with your teacher if you are unsure.

5. Check the blade for the correct tension.

6. Adjust hold-down so it will be as close as possible to the work.

7. Turn the machine by hand to make sure all parts are clear.

8. Make sure that no one but you are inside the operator’s zone.

9. Select the correct machine speed.

10. Wear face shield or goggles. Tie back long hair, push up long sleeves, and tuck in any dangling items (jewelry, hood pulls, etc.).

11. Hold material firmly.

12. Feed the material into the machine at a moderate rate of speed.

13. Keep fingers away from saw and hands out of the path of the saw.

14. Report all mechanical problems or broken blades to your teacher.

15. Turn off the power after using the scroll saw and stand by the machine until it has come to a full and complete stop.

16. Clear away scraps of wood on the table and bench only after the saw stops running.
