Wood Lathe Safety |
|
Wood Lathe Safety 1. Wear eye protection and remove loose clothing when operating the lathe. 2. Obtain the teacher’s permission before using the lathe. 3. Select stock for turning that is free of knots, poor graining, and splinters. Also, avoid turning stock that is improperly glued. 4. Check to see if stock is properly centered and secured firmly between centers. 5. Spin the work by hand before turning on power. 6. Always use sharp tools and the proper tool for the job. 7. Make sure tool rest is approximately 1/8 inch (5mm) from stock and no more than 3/8 inch away at any time. Note that the gap between the tool rest and the work is the DANGER ZONE. Fingers, hair, loose clothes, and jewelry can be pinched or grabbed resulting in injury. 8. Adjust the position of the tool rest as needed (and only when the lathe is off). 9. Remove tool rest before sanding or finishing to prevent fingers or clothing from being caught between it and the stock. 10. Do all rough cutting at low speed. 11. Avoid heavy cuts. 12. Hold cutting tool firmly and at proper angle to work. Don’t leave tools on bed of lathe. 13. Stop the lathe often to check tail stock adjustment. 14. Make all adjustments with power off. 15. Keep work area clean and free of chips and shavings at all times. 16. NEVER touch wood piece while it is turning no matter how smooth it may seem. 17. Do not talk to anyone while operating the lathe. |
