Architecture and Design
Flow Chart
for “Dream House”

1. Tape two pieces of graph paper together and draw a 2,000 square
foot area where the scale is 1/4” = 1’0”. You may count the 1/4” squares
or use the Architectural Scale to measure out this are. An area of 40’ x50’
equals 2000 square feet ( A = L x W ).

2. Design a custom floor plan referring to the specifications outlined
on the assignment sheet. The floor plan at this point should only define
each room and hall with single lines. Don’t worry about symbols at this
point. It is a good ideas to go back and look at the dimensions that were
measured in your own home or apartment as a reality check. Your teacher
will model this process.

3. Now plan for doors and windows. This is done by erasing 3’ holes where
you plan a single door and 6’ holes where you plan for double doors.
Windows in exterior walls can be as big or small as you want. Place a “D”
in the door openings and a “W” in the window openings.

4. Label your rooms and add dimensions. Example: ( Kitchen 10’ x 9’ ).Did
you include all the rooms assigned? If you did not use all of the 2000
square feet you may enlarge a room or add rooms of your choosing.

5. Show your rough plan to teacher and get your property. The first thing
you should do is make a neat box in the lower right hand corner and write:

FIRST AND LAST NAME
CLASS AND PERIOD
JOB TITLE: DREAM HOUSE FOR ______________
DATE
SCALE:1/4” = 1’0”

Page 2

You are encouraged to store your property in storage drawers under the windows.
Each class will be divided into an A drawer and the other half into B drawer.
Note: If you have an art tube your project can be carried back and forth safely.

6. Steps to finish your architecture project:

a. Duplicate the single line floor plan from the graph paper onto your property
paper in the location of your choice.

b. Now double the walls (two lines) so that they now have
thickness. The walls should be 6” thick. At _ “ scale this
is 1/8” thick double lines on your paper. Note: Your teacher will
demonstrate.

c. Add the garage or carport.

d. Install the doors and windows using the symbol sheet that
will be handed out. All the symbols can be made using nickel and
a ruler (or a template).

e. Add plumbing fixtures (sink, toilet, tub/shower) using symbol sheet.

f. Add the electrical symbols (switches, outlets, fixed lights) using the
symbols sheet.

g. Label the rooms and give the major dimensions inside of
brackets (e.g., kitchen ( 10’ x 8’ ).

h. If you have extra time you may design the yard around the house.
