Sprinting:
Definition: Sprinting is short-distance running in which the runner tries to maintain full speed for the whole race.
Olympic Distances are 100, 200, and 400 Meters.
Remember: Feed your face, run on hot coals, run past the finish line, run in a straight line.
Relays:
Definition: A relay race is made up of four sprints of equal distance put together.
Each equal distance is called a leg that is run by one of four teammates, the last of whom is called the anchor.
Each relay runner must carry a foot-long baton and pass it smoothly and quickly to the next runner.
The most popular relays are the 4 X 100-meter and the 4 X 400-meter.
Hurdling:
Definition: Hurdling is sprinting while having to clear hurdles of up to 42 inches.
Remember: Establish a pattern so that you can hurdle with the same lead leg each time. Reach for your lead foot with the opposite hand as you hurdle.
High Jump:
(Scissors Technique)
Make a J-shaped approach from the side that will put your kicking leg next to the bar. Drive your kicking leg and arms up, lie back and pull your belly-button up, then pull your ankles up.
Long Jump:
Sprint down the runway. Hit the board with your plant foot. Drive your kicking knee up. Rotate arms forward. Land with your feet together and your arms reaching forward.
