About Me

Name: Kari Naomi Nygaard

Years at JLS: I started at JLS during the 2005-06 school year.

Hometown: I grew up in Palo Alto and Cupertino, and now I live in San Francisco.

Schools attended:
Ohlone Elementary School (Palo Alto)
Stevens Creek Elementary School, Kennedy Jr. High School, Monta Vista High School (Cupertino)
Middlebury College (Middlebury, Vermont) - B.A. in International Studies
Middlebury College School in Florence, Italy
Santa Clara University - Secondary Subject Credential, English

High school activities: I have always been very active and involved. In high school I played volleyball, performed in school musicals, served as Senior Class President, survived a couple of AP classes, and sang in a show choir called the Monta Vista Variations. Outside of school, I took dance lessons and piano lessons, and during my senior year I had a job at the mall. I also tried to make time for my friends, so I was a very busy girl. I remember my parents were always giving me a hard time for being involved in TOO many things, and when I wanted to try out for the water polo team junior year, I had to sneak out of the house to do it!

Interests: I absolutely love to travel, so I try to plan as many trips as I can. I am a very social person and I love meeting up with friends and family, especially for outdoor activities like hiking, camping, fly fishing, sightseeing around San Francisco or skiing trips to Tahoe. When I'm by myself I enjoy cooking and baking, or listening to music and reading a good book (historical fiction is my favorite).

Volunteer work: In 2003, I spent a summer in Malawi, Africa, with an organization called World Camp. (www.worldcampforkids.org) As a World Camp counselor, I taught HIV/AIDS education to middle schoolers in rural villages. The Malawian people were so kind and welcoming to us, and I absolutely loved my experience there! Africa was mindboggling and beautiful... we even got to go on safari in Zambia, which was amazing. I believe strongly in World Camp's mission and I still serve on its Board of Directors.

Languages spoken: English (let's hope so!), Italian, French, and I hope to learn Spanish one of these days.
